Father of the Year?

29 year-old Desmond Hatchett (reportedly the father of 21 children by 11 different women), has found himself in court recently for failure to pay child support. If that weren't tragic enough, Mr. Hatchett said "I had four kids in the same year. Twice" But while he can't support them, he can remember their names, ages and dates of birth, and stated that all of the women knew about his large family - wonder if 4 of them knew they were all pregnant at the same time. Twice.

So blogger fam, what say you on Desmond Hatchett's "unintentional" family of 21 (so far) - should he be forced to have a vascectomy? Should he be allowed to keep procreating children he cannot support? What do you think about the women that have allowed this man to father their children (especially the later ones that presumably knew about the kids already born)? Octo-mom got a lot of flack for having 14 kids she cannot afford, but Octo-Mel (Mel Gibson) who is about to have his 8th child with his girlfriend definitely has enough money to support 8 kids. Is it ok to have a bunch of kids if you can afford them?

One of my cousin's father has 32 kids.
One of his (the guy with 32 kids) sons had 11 by the time he was 25.
IMO - It's just people having a lot of kids and hoping that one or two come out okay (and then hoping to live off of that child's success).
Kind of like wild animals over producing to raise the odds of survival.

I know a guy who has 17 brothers and sisters, but they all have the same parents and made a decent enough living to support them all - plus there were bigger gaps between ages than this guy - but the time the youngest ones were born, the oldest ones were out of the house.

So the guy with 32 kids (all I can say is wow) could he afford them all? Did he actually raise them or just donate sperm? Were all 32 with the same mother or multiple mothers? Seems almost like Polygamy without the marriage...

You know apart from the fact that it's the 21st century, a large number of children is not that unusual. My father was the 4th of 17 by his parents. And from what I understand, my grand-father had a few more from when he went, cough cough, visiting. True, old grand-dad took a heck of a lot longer to get his number up, but I think the practice and the outcome is the same.

Oh, they both just donate sperm.

But each of my paternal g-parents had about 15 siblings.
They all had the same parents and grew up on farms - so THAT'S understandable.

My grandfather had 15 children (well that I know about)with a few different women. But they all knew their father and he helped raise and support them.

I see nothing wrong with having a big family, but you have to be realistic. If you know you can't afford to take care of the children you already have, you shouldn't be having more.

This guy is a douchebag, and I feel badly for all of the kids who not only have to contend with the fact that their father didnt put a whole lot of thought into busting that nut, but their mothers were just receptacles for his load.

Its bad enough the education system in this country is set up for our kids to fail...but parents set them up to starve and struggle.

Yes, he should have a vasectomy and any of these women who make a living out of having multiple children from mulitple men should have their tubes tied. I am talking about serial baby makers.

Makes my stomach hurt really, really bad just thinking about it.

Thats a slippery slope, if you say fix him than who is to say that women with more than one baby daddy shouldnt be fixed? Add in the fact that these women didnt bother protecting themselves than it gets grayer.

If I WAS HIM I would get my self fixed.

20 kids?

Im good homey.

And money cant substitute time in a childs life which you cant do if you have that many kids.

hey at least he knows their names and b-days. it sounds like he just can afford to support them, no like he's ducking the issue. While i think he should stop since he can't afford them you can't MAKE him stop. maybe give him a lifetime supply of condoms.

I know of a polygamist family with 32 children that has a combined income of over $100,000,000 a year. Now is that right or wrong?

Honestly though I say that its none of my freaking business how many kids this guy has. Once you get your kid a birth certificate and SSN the child belongs to the state anyways. I have seen this used in defense of one "dead beat" dad with success. Based on the fact that the state owns your child, he objected to child support and won. To this day the guy doesn't pay a cent last I heard.

Casper: 32 kids on $100k... with 34 people (32 + 2 parents, even though I am sure there are more than two) that's only $2,941 per person per year.... and is the $100k gross or net? Because if that's gross earnings, then that's not going too get them too far with all those mouths to feed.

I need some more info on part two of your comment - "belongs to the state" how? What exactly was his argument and who allowed him to get away with it?

Not 100K, $100 Million dollars a year. The patriarch of that family has organized his children in an vertically integrated monopoly.

As for the second part of this I will get back with you with a detailed response but right now I gotta run.

ooooh - miss read that. Well then, yep if he can afford them he can have as many kids as he wants!
